CDC PLACES—LOCAL HEALTH DATA

CDC’s PLACES (Population Level Analysis and Community Estimates)is a public data tool that helps users look up health and health-related measures for specific communities across the United States. It provides estimates for several local levels, including counties, cities/towns (places),census tracts, and ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs), using a statistical method designed to produce local estimates even when direct survey samples are limited. PLACES is built from multiple sources, including the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and U.S. Census–related data, including the American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates. The most recent update posted by CDC in December 2025 includes 40 measures in total, with most measures drawn from 2023 BRFSS data and a small set carried forward from 2022 BRFSS for items collected in even years. The PLACES tool is commonly used by agencies and partners to review local patterns in chronic disease and related factors ,compare areas, and download estimates for planning and reporting. CDC also notes that PLACES can support identifying local priorities, including communities experiencing disparities and areas where health and community needs overlap.
